blood test opting out

Hello, I have my first prenatal appointment coming up on Tuesday and I am extremely nervous about the blood tests they do. I have always had a huge fear of needles (I've done 2 unmedicated home births). I am going with a doctor this time as I do not have $3000 to drop on another home birth. Has anyone opted out of all blood work including the initial testing at the first appt? I'm wondering if doctors allow you to. I had it done with my oldest son, but the only test I did with my second was the anemia test at 28 weeks. Please help! I am a nervous wreck wondering how the doctor will respond to me not wanting to do any of it. I don't feel like I'm at risk for anything as I've had 2 completely complication-free pregnancies and births.

They do a CBC and check for anemia as well as AIDS and sugar levels. They get your blood type in case your blood is negative and the father's is positive (I already know mine is O+). Basically the same thing you are talking about. I'm glad to know you had to sign for it. Maybe that means it's not required?? I'm hoping that since the biggest concern is blood typing and I already know mine, maybe they won't give me as hard a time. I think you can turn down the glucose test. You just need to watch your diet, which I usually eat pretty healthy anyway, and I'm at a healthy weight.

The only blood test my Dr did in the beginning was HIV/stds I believe and i even had to sign for that. Not sure what other blood work you would be talking about? If its for medical tests to see if its something your baby could be born with that's always optional. They always ask if you want to be tested or not. We always pass on that cause I don't want to stress over something that may not even be true or not. I of course did the glucose testing at 28 weeks but that has to be done I don't think you get a choice in that.

Thanks everyone. It is a new doctor that I am going to which I why I'm so nervous. I've never met her so I don't know if she will not accept me as a client if I refuse it. I intend to do so but I'm hoping I get an ultrasound first in case she refuses me! I really want to know how far along I am (I think I'm almost 10 weeks).

The only time my blood was taken was when I chose to have a test done in which they drawl blood to see if I was a carrier for something (I don't remember..lol..probably bc it was neg!) and when I had my glucose test done. But I'm 34 weeks and 4 days so I'm not too sure in how everything else works just quite yet..sorry wish I knew more!

Doctors cannot force you to do anything you don't want them too. By law it is your right to do with your body as you please and can refuse any treatment you don't want to do.
