can you take a pregnancy test while on your period?

I have taken the morning after pill back to back which lessens its chances of working, i then did not have a period for 6 weeks which is very irregular for me. could i be preggo and would a test tell me?

MY PERIOD IS IRREGULAR. MONTH OF FEB. 2011 I GOT IT ON THE 17TH, 2 DAYS IT WAS DARK BROWN, THEN BY THE THIRD DAY IT WAS PRETTY HEAVY, AT NIGHT I WAS FEELING SO MUCH TIGHTNESS AND PAIN IN MY LOWER TUMMY. (I HAVE 3 KIDS) SO IT FELT JUST LIKE CONTRACTIONS. THE NEXT DAY I CHECKED MY PAD THERE WAS WHAT I THOUGHT A BLOOD CLOT BUT THIS WOULD NOT BREAK AWAY WHY TH NORMAL CLOTS. IT LOOKED JUST LIKE TISSUE FROM THE INSIDE, AS BIG AS A TABLESPOON (ROUND PART) I GOT PRETTY SCARED DIDNT KNOW WHAT IT IS. ITS BEEN 12 DAYS AND IM STILL LETTING OUT DARK DARK BROWN BLOOD OR SOMETHING. WHAT CAN THIS BE? I HAVENT MADE AN APPT WITH MY GYNO BUT IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT MAY BE HAPPENING OR IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ANYONE. MIND SHARING WHAT THIS COULD BE?

martikadragoon- her title says period.....not bleeding or spotting so thats why there would be no need for her to take a pregnancy test if she was acutally on her period. there being a difference

This is why I put "period" in quotes..

And my Mom had her "period" (like bleeding) for the ENTIRE pregnancy for ALL of her pregnancies, as did my sister.. It IS possible regardless of what is actually called.. That is point I was trying to make. Just wanted to clarify...

Kim1989~ I'm sorry if I tick you off with this. My mom had period LIKE bleeding while pregnant with each of us for the first few months. she CAN Take a pregnancy test, because the bleeding she is experiencing can possibly be period LIKE bleeding. I'm not saying a period but like one.... it is possible. :)

there is no point in taking a pergnancy test on your period. that would mean your not pregnant.

You don't get your period while you are pregnant. The actual act of a period is impossible since your not ovulating. However some people get decidual bleeding which happens around the time that your normal period would be due and lasts for as long. Its where you have a build up of hormones and your body remembers shedding the lining of your uterus while have a period and goes on to do the same thing... however there is no egg and no actual cycle and it usually only happens during the first trimester of the pregnancy.

I just wanted to add that you can still get your period when you are pregnant. My Mother had full "periods" with all of her pregnancies, She bled for 5-7 days each month.. as did one of my siblings. Having a "period" doesnt necessarily rule out pregnancy. Definitely decreases the chances since most women stop getting a "period" But NOT all women do! =D

You do not need to take a pregnancy test on your period. If you are having a period then you're not pregnant. Prenatal bleeding and periods are two different things. Also, and this is MY opinion, I wouldn't take Plan B like that. It's a ton of hormones that mess up your cycle.

Well, if you are habitually using Plan B, it can really mess up your cycles. I would take a HPT, then when you get the results, go to your Dr. for A.) BIRTH CONTROL or B.) If you are pregnant, you need prenatal care.
