i was a few days late this past jan. and then it came but only spotting for 4 days, 1 week and 1/2 later i took 2 positive hpt's. 2 days later i went to our local health dep. and got a negative exactly 5 days later i got another negative. i had another period that month which was very heavy and lasted only 3 days. by my calculations i should have been 4 weeks when i took the first test. could i have had a chemical pregnancy??

Hello,

A chemical pregnancy is a term applied to assisted reproduction (e.g., in vitro fertilization) when an hCG level is detectable, but no pregnancy tissue is ever identified.  It is generally not a term applied to spontaneously conceived pregnancies.

It sounds like you had an early pregnancy loss.  Often this sort of thing would go unrecognized and appear to be a slight blip in the menstrual cycle.  Also, you should know, ~15-30% of recognized pregnancies result in a loss.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I hope everything works out for you.  I know how you feel.  I had been tring for 12 years.  After 4 surgeries over the 12 years.  I had been having alot of break through bleeding and I was so tired of it.  I had made a dr appt and when in and out of no where.  She comes in and tells me I'm Pregnant and we were both in shock.  She sent me for HCG test and called me on Saturday to meet her at the office.  She said she couldn't wait till Monday and well I couldn't either.  She did an ultrasound and there he was with a heartbeat She said that I must be about 6weeks.  I go back on Monday to get another US.  Let me know what happens.

Update:
My HCG was up to 1104 yesterday, and I was able to get a vaginal and pelvic ultrasound.  We were able to rule out ectopic pregnancy, and we found a sac in my uterus!  It's only measuring 5 weeks, instead of the 5 weeks and 5 days that we thought based on my LMP.  My OB-GYN says I must have conceived late in my cycle.  I'm going back next week to get another ultrasound, and we should be able to detect a heartbeat and see the fetal pole and yolk sac!  I'll feel much better then!

Just wanted to provide an update on my situation.  (I have found tons of helpful information by reading these forums!)  My hcg levels are rising... 181 at 19 DPO and 430 at 22 DPO.  My DPO is just an estimate as it is possible that my hcg levels are lower/slower rising than normal if I ovulated later in my cycle.

I think everyone in this situation should have hope!  After extensive online research, I think everyone's hcg levels are different, and keep in mind that approx. 15% of women have slower rising hcg levels, less than doubling every 48 hours!

Thanks, everyone!

I just got the results from my hcg quantity test at approx. 19 DPO and it is 181.  At approx. 13 DPO it was 50, and at 15 DPO it was 73.  According to my OB-GYN, my hcg levels are rising but they are not doubling as quickly as they should be.  Have you ever had a patient that started out with low hcg levels and delivered a normal, healthy baby?

Hi, it sounds like you're going to miscarry... sorry!  I went through the same thing just this other month.  I know how terrible you feel, and I'm truely sorry.  Even though it doesn't make it any better, you should know that this happens to 15-20% of women.  Just keep trying and try not to think about it.  Sorry and good luck.

I didn't have any of my usual PMS symptoms this month, so I took an early result pregnancy test 2 days before my normal cycle should have begun. Actually, I took 5 pregnancy tests and they were all positive! My husband and I were so excited after trying to conceive for 14 months! I asked my OB-GYN for a blood test because I wanted to be sure before telling our 10 year old daughter and family and friends. At approx. 13 days DPO, or the day before I should have started my cycle, my hcg level was 50. My OB-GYN wanted to repeat after 48 hours because they said the number was low. At approx. 15 days DPO my hcg was only 73. My OB-GYN says there is 0% chance that this will be a normal, viable pregnancy because my hcg number did not double. I am waiting now to see if I begin a menstrual cycle, which he believes I will within a few days. If not, I will repeat the hcg quantity test at 19 days DPO. Is there any chance that this could be a normal pregnancy? I am probably just in denial as this has been the most emotional "rollver coaster" of a time I have ever dealt with.

I had an IUD for 7yrs, and just had it taken out Feb 8th. We're ttc. We were sexually active the day I had it taken out and a couple days ago(we're trying for a Boy this time and read that you should build up the XY count every 4 to 5 days to better your chances for a Boy??? Anyway, my regular menstrual cycle returned right on schedule on Feb. 22, but seems to be disappearing quickly, if not completely by today. I also heard that it was good to have atleast one cycle before ttc(or getting Pg)... Can you answer these questions for me? Thank You, J.
