Metastaic Prostate Cancer to the bones

My father was diagnosed with Prostate cancer WITHOUT a PSA.  It was advanced at level 4 Glesson 8 and very aggressive with invasion.  The oncologists here are at a teaching hospital and after his radiation and chemo he was not well looked after because they said he did not have a PSA, therefore the cancer was gone.  For about a year he has been complaining of pain in his hips, legs and now his ribs.  They would not run a bone scan because of the lack of a PSA.  His pain has been so severe that he hurts if someone just touches his arm or embraces him.  We finally got them to do the bone scan after much protesting.  They said that the scan lit up like a Christmas tree.  He is to do a bone biopsy.  What is the likeliness that he will be able to have anything done that will ease the pain that he is in?  I know that the chances of killing this type of cancer are minimal, but I want to know what can be done to keep him from suffering.
