Post Prostatectomy PSA

My husband (age 56) is status post 6 months radical prostatectomy (4 of 12 lymph nodes positive for cancer), post 7 weeks radiation therapy and is currently on Lupron injections every 4 months.  His PSA was initially 5.5 right after surgery then it went down to 2.6.  It was done last week and is at 14.8.  He doesn't see the doctor for another week, wondering if chemo would be the next course of action.

Very concerned wife, Diana

Hi,
1.psa levels can rise if part of the prostate tissue was left or the cells are in another part of the body and can continue to release psa
2. also inflamation if part of the prostate tissues were left can cause an increase in psa.
3.

Thank you so much for your input!  We met with his urologist yesterday and he is doing a CT scan of the pelvic/abdomen area and a bone scan to see if the cancer is in another area.  My husband has also developed severe pain when urinating and sharp pain in the testicles.  I'm hoping the scans gives us some answers and direction.  Thanks again, Diana

sorry
3. recent ejaculation can cause a rise in psa prior to the test

bottom line is that part of the prostate tissue can remain even if a total removal was declared.
