Radiation Proctitis

I had 43 radiation treatments (IMRT) for prostate cancer.  Cancer was small and confined to prostate.  I was OK throughout the treatments but it is now 6 weeks after and have developed what my primary care physician says he thinks is radiation proctitis.  My radiation oncologist just kept having me come back and only prescribed pain pills.  Finally went to my primary who prescribed mesalamine suppositories and benefiber.  Oncologist said follow a low fiber diet.  I feel awful, very painful in anus, feels like I have cuts inside.  If I take a pain pill (acetaminophen + codeine) in enough time before bowel movement I can get through the day but if it hasn't kicked in by then, I am in pain all day.  Haven't had diarrea (diarrhea) lately.  Does this sound like the right diagnosis?  When will the pain stop?  When can I eat normally again?  Oncologist said no fruits or vegetables, no whole grains, no beans, no spicy, no sauces etc.  OK for white bread, pasta, and I have gained 8 pounds.  I just want to be normal again.

With radiation therapy, 5-20% of patients display proctitis.Early symptoms include tenesmus and diarrhea that resolve shortly after the treatment period. Later symptoms of proctitis (occurring months to years after the completion of radiation therapy) include tenesmus, bleeding, low-volume diarrhea, and rectal pain. Proctosigmoidoscopy can reveal some of the changes which further confirm the diagnosis. It would be better if you consult a colorectal specialist for further advice.
