SCARED FOR MY DAD PSA TEST...

by SUNNYK, Oct 30, 2009 09:33AM
My father just got some blood tests back from a physical and his PSA is at 7.9. 2 yrs ago it was 4. in the last week or so he has been feeling like he has a full bladder only to have go a little bit. other than that he feels fine. he has an appt with a urologist in 2 weeks. but he is really freaking out, as am i. he is 62 yrs young. is that a dangerous rise in 2 years? i need more info to call his nerves as well as mine.
thanks all!

sorry to say, but yes, that is a rise that's cause for alert.  Maybe it's benign, BPH, they call it, hummm, that fast of a rise I'm betting it is BPH....but I'm guessing here.  They'll probably give him Cipro to see if that works, but Bactrim is better, if he has an older doctor they'll give him Bactrim, it's a sulfur drug and it's great, but it's been around forever, new docs think all the old stuff doesn't work ~ ya know what I mean?

when he goes in have him ask for a "Free PSA" test, it's a simple blood test that is always correct, it's new so they don't do it as routein.  But it beats the heck out of a biopsy, they'll want to do a biopsy.  It measures the free and bound PSA, the lower the number (10% and under) the more certain it is cancer.

good luck!

Sorry to hear about your dad.  His numbers dont sound real encouraging.  My PSA went from 2 to 4.5 and I had prostate cancer.  The increase is the key more so than the size of the number they told me.  I met guys whos PSA had increased from 1 to 2.5 and they had early prostate cancer.  I had my treated with Proton Radiation at Loma Linda University Medical center. It is the very best treatement...90% cure rate and little to no side effects. Go to a website called Proton Bob and read the patient testimonial section.

Hi, my dad's was 11 at one point. His tumour is still contained within the prostate so he is having radiotherapy for 6 weeks and is expected to fully recover, so don't feel too pessimistic. If he does have cancer, it doesn't mean it's the end of him, especially if it is still contained within the prostate, it's really treatable. Good luck, i know how you are feeling as I went through the same thing

my dad had a dre done and urine tests, everything looked/felt fine. he is schedueled for a biopsy 12/4. i was hoping he had an enlarged prostate to explain his psa of 7.8. since it is no enlarged does that mean its likely to be cancer?
