prostate exam

During a routine physical the doctor noticed a pencil sized hard spot.  He said despite being 50, my physical condition, blood work and other signs suggest it is just a calcium spot.  What do you think? He suggested an ultrasound.

Hi:
DRE is not an exact science, 3 different doctors felt a nodule and as a consequence I went for a biopsy.  At the biopsy they found no nodule.  Now I wait to see if I went through all the agravation for nothing.

Hi,
The simple answer I would say  is to consider having a PSA done and based on its result- reconsider your options.

If you have no symptoms at all, bear in mind that Prostate Cancer screening is a shared decision. There is no clear evidence that the screening improves survival (unlike Breast Cancer screening in women), hence, each man must make a decision. The advantage of screening is that you can have a more active position in terms of options (since early disease generally means more options), however you place yourself at risk of getting diagnosed with a cancer that may not likely become symptomatic in your lifetime.
