Musical Hallucinations

Please help me ! Very soon I'll be out of my mind, completely crazy. These musical hallucinations started in October and last since I get up until I go to bed, and when I go to bed they continue and I cannot sleep. Where I go, they follow me. They don't come from my brain, they are everywhere, all over the places I am. Church bells banging and banging,
Someone with a machine to make a hole, open the ground T R R R R R.....
But most of the times it's church bells.
PLEASE HELP ME !
Thank you
Diana190
Please, could my message be sent ALSO TO A DOCTOR WHO CAN HELP ME > Thank you so much !

This is the second time I have had it.  First of all was when I spent 3 weeks in hospital.   I manifested it's self as a music on an album.  Sometimes stuff I may have heard in the past -  Sometimes not.
The music was incredibly loud; but if it was interrupted by visitors or nursing staff, it would fade away. It would always return when the hospital ward was quiet.  I became so distressed that my family brought in a radio and headphones to wear at night to see if that would help me sleep.  It did.
When I left hospital, the sounds soon faded away.

Sadly, a few days back, it came on again.
It is slightly different this time, as it is loud as before, but also on a loop.  The 'tunes' are more more orchestral or opera.  They never leave the loop but are continuous. Nothing seems to stop it.  I feel I will loose my sanity.

Musical hallucinations may be rare, but auditory hallucinations -- hearing sounds or voices -- are considerably more common.

If the anti-psychotic didn't help you (making now, the assumption that no anti-psychotic will help, which is by no means certain), then it might be time to look for a physical cause. A logical next step is to order tests to look for some physical defect such a brain lesion. Musical hallucinations can have a physical cause.

Keep us posted! This is sure interesting.

Dear Swampy,

You seem to be a "Brain Savvy".
I am followed by a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists know about common and typical hallucinations and how to treat them. But my psychiatrist said that he cannot help me because mine is a VERY RARE type of hallucination, and he booked me an appointment with a neurologiist specialised in that kind of hallucinations. Because, here, in Canada, it's not every neurologist who can treat musical hallucinations, it's only Specialised Neurologists in Musical Hallucinations.
I asked my psychiatrist to prescribe me a med, and he gave me  an  ANTI-PSYCHOTIC, THAT WORSENED ME. Now he gave me an ANTICONVULSANT, which is helping me at least a little bit.
Thank you so much for your help and concern
Cheers, Diana

Cherie,
I could use head phones ONLY on Friday and Saturday night, Because I work on the weekdays, and I need to hear my alarm clock
Thank you very much for all your help, concern and good wishes Dear Cherie
Love, Diana

Interesting.

What this says is that your frontal lobe (which is responsible for sorting everything out) is quite capable of knowing what is real and what is a hallucination.

Or -- the hallucination is a sympathetic neural network that doesn't fire in the event of the primary neural network firing (makes sense?).

Swampy strongly suspects that once you get a doctor looking at you you'll be fine. Expect to get prescribed an anti-psychotic (something like Risperdal).

Also, you should know that many people do develop these kinds of symptoms at some point in their life.

Swampy,

That is a very good solution. But when I am at the office I have no radio, and cannot start singing. When I am in the street those hallucinations continue. When I'm back home, what I do while hearing the hallucinations are to take a bath and to eat supper TIME WHEN I PUT MY TV ON AND DON'T HEAR THEM. Problem, my TV is not working well, the image and voice leave, SO I PUT IT OFF.
But, what I could do when arriving home is to DO EVERYTHING WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC ON..
THANK YOU SWAMPY, YOU SOLVED ME PART OF MY PROBLEM: WHEN I'M HOME.
WHAT I CANNOT SOLVE is when I go to bed at night, because these hallucinations do not want to leave me even when I go to sleep. AND IF THEN I PUT CLASSICAL MUSIC, OR ANY MUSIC, NEIBOURS WILL COMPLAIN, AND THE LANDLORD WILL PUT ME ON THE STREET.
Thank you so much Swampy !!!

Dear Cherie,
Unfortunately, yesterday the hallucinations came back when coming back from work.
Swampy had a good idea, and I'll always put music when I arrive home.but as I said I cannot put any kind of music or make any noises at night, when I go to bed, and I still have them.
BUT TODAY FOR EXAMPLE I HAVE THEM, BUT THEY ARE NOT VERY LOUD, IT'S LIKE A BACKGROUND, SO IT'S LESS AGGRESSINVE AND VIOLENT.
Cherie, Again, thank you so much for everything !!!

You know what is likely happening here? The part of your brain that your ears stimulate when you hear music got connected to the wrong place, or is firing on its own. More likely, though, something triggers it. Problem is, so much goes on in a brain that its very difficult to figure it out.

If you actually DO turn on the radio and listen to music, do the hallucinations stop? Or do the two pieces of music -- real and imagined -- collide?

What if you start singing while you are hallucinating? Does the hallucination go away or diminish?

Dear Cherie: Thank you very much for everything ! Yesterday afternoon I went to my psychiatrisst, who phoned that neurologist specialized in musical hallucinations. My psychiatrist spoke with one of his secretaries, and all of that neurologist's appointments are booked until March. Therefore, yesterday afternoon my psychiatrist booked me an appointment for March 10, IN TWO MONTHS !!!
So today I phoned the neurologist's office to try to get an earlier appointment, but I couldn't get it. But the secretary told me that I am welcome to phone from  time to time, to see if this neurologist has a cancellation.
Incredible. At that office there are 18 neurologists, but only this one knows and is specialized in musical hallucinations. WHY DO I HAVE TO BE SUCH A RARE INDIVIDUAL THAT HAS VERY RARE DISEASES THAT NEED A SPECIALIST ..... (sorry, at the office I cannot find the question mark on the PC.
BUT I HAVE A GOOD NEWS, THAT MIGHT BE ONLY FOR SOME HOURS.: Since November I have had these musical hallucinations daily, BUT TODAY, EXCEPTIONALLY, THEY DIDN'T PRESENT YET. But, there's the time for it to happen, because here it's 9:30 am

I cannot go to USA for treatment because I'm working at an office and cannot take sick leave (because I have recently asked to my employer's insurance, to add to my insurance long term invalidity. And I am waiting for their answer. But if I took a sick leave, THE ANSWER WOULD BE NO)
Please wish me that AT LEAST THEY DO NOT PRESENT TODAY. In a few days I'll turn completely crazy, because these hallucinations are church bells that are banging and banging together in a verh violent way!

Again, thank you so much Cherie

oh,,,,Diana Im so sorry for you dont you think if you went to his office and appoligised in person it may help..I know working the system can be difficult..I think this kind of hallucination is rare anywhere but it does exist...Would seeing a neurologist who does not specialise in it in the mean time possibly be of any help to you?

Im sorry you are suffering so...are you anywhere close to the detroit bridge where you could come to USA for treatmant?  Will your psychologist try again for you perhaps a bit more aggressivley? I know this can be treated...call , beg write a letter do what you must to see him.....I really do wish you all the best.

A psychiatrist who follows me, and said that he cannot help me, because my type of hallucinations are very rare, had scheduled an appointment for me with a neurologist specialized in musical hallucinations. As in October, I had some days without hallucinations, I was sure it was over, and I CANCELLED MY APPOINTMENT. But since November these hallucinations are every day. So my psychiatrist send an email to this neurologist, BUT HE IS NOT RESPONDING, SURELY BECAUSE I CANCELLED  ONCE. In Canada, this kind of hallucinations is very rare, SO YOU MUST FIND A NEUROLOGIST SPECIALIZED IN IT. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE I SCREWED IT UP, BECAUSE AFTER MY CANCELLATION, HE DOESNÈT WANT TO GIVE ME ANOTHER APPOINTMENT..

So, I really don't know what I will do.
Thank you so much Cherie

this isnt likely to be any help but I saw an episode of House that was about this and all of there shows are based on true cases so it must be a real phenomona  I would think a neurologist would be the first doctor to see.

Sorry, I've never heard of it but it sounds awful. It sounds as if you need help quickly. Have you been to your doctor?  I think you should either go and see your doctor or attend an emergency room.

I think you've been very strong to have been able to put up with that for so long. Please get some help.  We all have to ask for help from time to time.
