Pain with anal cancer

The medical oncologist gave me morphine sulfate ER 15mg yesterday because percocet wasn't working enough anymore, but the morphine isn't so great either. After 8 hours I had to take a norco and there is still pain enough to keep me from thinking about anything else. I can only take the morphine every 12 hours. Does it build up effectiveness, or is this as good as it's going to get? Will a stronger pill last longer? I have one lesion, Stage 2. It really hurts.

Sorry ..just saw you have a stage 2 leison.  I was stage IIIb by time a doctor diagnosed.  It was overlooked when I had a colonoscopy or I would have started treatment earlier.

What I remember is the pain of the exams, biopsies, and radiation.

No oncologist I met ever skimped on pain meds.  Not sure what stage II feels like.  But must involve pain or you wouldnt be on morphine.

Many pain meds will not make you sleepy.  In fact, when pain is gone you will be more alert.  I went to MD Anderson 5 days a week for 6 weeks..then spent a week in hospital...with c dif and kidney failure (caused by 2 types of chemo I had to take for the 6 wks.)

No way could I have lived thru that without meds

Take care...and insist on something that will relieve pain without making you sick or sleepy!  .

So you have anal cancer?  I am a survivor of that cancer and know the pain of the cancer and radiation.

Whatever or wherever the cancer is....what has been done?  Is radiation recommended? Chemo?   Surgery?

The very last thing you should be worried about at this stage is pain meds.

Percocet wont help.  I didnt take morphine...but have a friend who does (stage 4 breast cancer)....oxycontin(sp) was what got me thru radiation.

I don't know how in the world you can work like this.
