Swollen Breasts

by Jememm, Oct 05, 2009 01:37PM
I have had to have the inplant replaced in my right breast, about three weeks ago, and is is still swollen larger than my right breast.  I am going twice a week to the doctor to have fluid drawn off with a needle.  Other than putting in a drain, what else can be done for this fluid retention.  I have had bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction of both breasts with back tissue.

Did your plastic surgeon put in a drain at the time of surgery? And if so, what was your output before it was pulled out? It should have been less than 20 cc's for 48 hours before removing the drain.

I wouldn't have a drain installed now if twice a week aspirations are working for you.

As for the swelling, give it some time. You are obviously having a drainage issue that should correct itself within the next two weeks or so if all goes well. This is not uncommon really. If he didn't give you a drain at the time of surgery I'd ask him why, since that's the norm with bilateral mastectomes, with or without reconstruction. You should start seeing dramatic changes in the next couple of weeks.

Best wishes
