My son who is mentally challenged 19 yr old. has been materbating, I guess, with knives or sissors.  I have noticed scratches on his penis and legs but I attributed them to the way he sleeps, until I went into his room one day and saw his pants shreaded and twisted in a knife, still on him and he had an errection.  He's done this several times and i don't know how to help him.  The phsychiatric dr kind of laughed and said someone should teach him to masterbate and just raised the lexapro meds. It is as if he is trying to cut it off but he also feels pain like I do so I just don't know.  I don't want to find him bleeding to death or worse and have considered castration.  It is a very serious problem for me.  He's low functioning pre-k level and learns in spurts.  He has behavior problems without meds and other problems............Down's syndrome, authism.  Am I crazy for thinking of castration and is there help for him in some other way?

I'm kind of curious that you don't  know how to spell autism - it sounds like this is maybe just a guess on your part?  

I think at this point,  I would lock up ALL the knives and scissors in the house.

well,  how come hes still alive right now?  how long has he been doign this? castration.. i dotn think so.. humans has instincts even those who are mentally illed will back off when pain comes along.. u get what i mean.. ok, since ur child is mentally ill, dont leave ur eye on him.. guide him... maybe u have plenty of porn mags in his room? or perhaps buy him toy scissors or a toy knife.. but, if this is true then seeked some serious help.. i dont know... this sounds odd...

i agree with rock rose, lock all sharp objects up and maybe dad could give him a "tip" on what to use or not use.

I am a mother of 3 boys.  All are healthy, but we are all mothers and want the best for our children.  My 11yo son the other day threw out a sentance "not in your wet dreams"  I asked him what a wet dream was and he said it was when you pee in your sleep.  It was time for "THE TALK"  we had it.  It was awkward, but it was helpful.  I know your son has a disability and may not be able to understand "THE TALK" maybe seek help from a counselor.  Definatly hide the weapons in your house.

you said your son's psychiatrist laughed when you told him about it?  Your kid's problem is kind of of weird, but shrinks are supposed to be understanding of these things and I'm not sure the problem is funny at all...maybe he's just trying to lighten up the whole thing, but i don't know, it looks like something that needs serious thought..and some serious help..

in the meantime, setting up the household to prevent any unfortunate incident would be a big help...

i dont know about castration.  your son may be unaware of his illness, but I guess that part of his body is  functioning normally since he is still doing what the vast majority of males are doing...taking it away from him totally, who knows how devastating this will be for him?  

just a thought.

Definatly lock up all scissors and knives.  

And find a new Dr that doesn't have the nerve to laugh at his problems.  That is so not helping anything.  I mean, they might laugh at us when we leave, but how unprofessional to laugh in your face!!  You're paying this person to help your son, he works for you.  Make him earn his money, or find someone who will.

Why if he is mentally challenged he has accsess to knifes in the first place. Does he own one or is he using  kitchen knifes? I he's  going to use "toys" show him which ones.
Don't make him feel like what he's  doing is bad but let him know its not good.

Tell him t at masturbation isn't bad but hurting yourself isn't good. I'd talk to a professional.

I agree with Marra that he could not be fully understanding what is going on with his body and trying to cut it off.  This is a question I hate to ask and believe I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but do you think he's been sexually abused and that could be why he's doing this?  That sounds like a very plausable reason for doing this.

Geez...If I had a mentally challanged child I would take the sharp objects away from them.  Why would you give him knives and sissors in the first place?  OK everyone I vote Troll again!!  I mean she has not even responded....  Besides what idiot of a parent would let their child near sharp objects.  Troll??  Who agrees here??

I agree with
[1] take away all sharp instruments from your son.  why does he have access to them in the fist place??
[2] Ask him what he is doing. Or place a  camera in his room.

[3] Here is the big one. Would he have any moral reason to think that perhaps masturbating is wrong. All be it for moral or religious reasons.
If the answer is yes. I have to inform you that the fault lies with the parent. That's clear from the start actually.

He may be frustrated, board, angry, etc, masturbating is perhaps his ONLY outlet.
If he is lead to think that it is a bad thing, he could be expressing regret and guilt.

hey this is odd but I think fixable. Since you son is mentally challegend you should read up pn the issue via a book not the internet. Have a male talk to him about it (via Uncle Cousin or friend that he lools up to).  I seen someone say you should show him how NO, get porn mags No, doing this wll not help unless you plan on changing his pants and washing the carpet daily. This is not a phaze you want to encourge, you've got him this far now you have to make adjustments with age and curiosty. For one lockup all sissors and silverware. Screen what he wathces because women on TV are hot, which migth be a reason he started this.Get him interest in something new as a distration and it will phaze out. and make sure visitors dress appropriatly.
