My Partner has suffered allergies and been treated for about 6 years.  He lost his sence of smell about 2 years ago but recently suffered loss of hearing in 1 ear now although he cannot smell regularly tells me he can smell like burning trees/leaves (Nobody else can smell these smells)

Having the sensation of an odor and the ability to smell are not the same.  It is possible to have both at the same time.
