2 months of dry coughing, no relief

by angelbabydoll, Sep 26, 2008 12:59AM
I have had a Chronic cough since July 21st 2008. and it has just gotten worse. I took myself to the ER in NY and they said it was Acute Broncitis and gave me Robatussin with codien. It didn't work.I ended up with lyringitius on top of the cough. that lasted a week. the cough is still ongoing. I tried Robatussiun for cough. that worked a little. then tried Deslym. That seemed to work for a few days to releive it so it wasn't as bad, but it was still there. So when I returned to AL. I went tomy regular doctor. The nurse practiciner said I had an infection in my lungs and both ears. She gave me another inhaler and cough medicine. This worked for a few days as well. Then it came back worse then before. So she called in Endacof. and that doesn't work at all. I don't know what to do. Its been 2 months with no relief. I cough so hard I almost get sick. my throat hurts fromit for a while and my body hurts from it while I cough. If anyone knows what I should do, please tell me. I am up for anything.

Hello,

I exprienced that before.. im coughing for 2 months i took all the medicine that my dr gave to me but it didnt work... It possible sarcoids (search sarcoids in web for more info) thats the number 1 symptom (never ending cough/dry cough -take note) ask your doctor for chest xray to make it sure.

I had a chronic cough, it was making me ill, and I couldn't sleep.  It turned out to be an Ace Inhibitor I was taking for high blood pressure.

Maybe you too are on some medication, that the symptoms include 'cough.'
If you are on any meds, check-out the symptoms, and if it turns out that might be the cause, then simply as the Doctor to prescribe a new kind of drug for the same issue, and it might take a week or two to work.

my dry persistent cough started Sep 07 -  Nov 07 I got pleurisy - then pleural effusion - never explained
But, the cough continued steady until spring.
Still have it, but slowed down  - now it only happens if I am trying to talk fast or if I breathe in too deep
Get an x-ray -  ask them to keep following up - as long as you are coughing, there is a reason.

Good luck,

Carol

Hi

Ive had this really bad cough for about 4 weeks now, at first it wasnt too bad, a bit dry. but its gotten alot worse i cough so hard that i have to go to the bathroom and that i almost be sick, i almost cough so much at one time that i cant breathe and my eyes water. I went the docters in the second week i was told it was a chest infection, after a week of that i went back and told him that it got worse, he then told me it was bronchitis (spelling). Im on another type of medication now, and im also using a steroid puffer but i feel like its getting more worse and worse. what do i do? do i continue taking the medication and see what happes after the 5 days or do i go back?? Im a little worried.

Thanks

Hello!

Did your dr request for chest xray? coz my experience was dsame. my two dr told me i have pleurasy (infection) and after 2 months taking all medication it didnt  work. i ask for chest xray(yes im the one who ask for chest xray- so funny) and they foundout something possible sarcoids - not yet confirm. sarcoids symtom usually dry cough  and take months. my condition still under observation coz they found other problem. so much better for your to ask your dr and ask for chest xray if possible. =)

My father has a chronic cough. Its been going on for over two months and im worried sick about what the cause is.

The thing is, his cough doesnt come with any other symptoms apart from it being worse at night (usually) which probably indicates theres something in there.

He went through antibiotics, asthma pumps and now the doctor thinks its hay fever (??). Strange diagnosis considering he only has one symptom of hay fever...

I guess if they have no idea what it is, the only thing they can do is eliminate what it could be and do scans / blood tests until its figured out.

Your cough sounds a lot worse though as my dads cough is hardly too often around during the day. Just persist in seeing your nurses or doctors and follow their instructions.

The more medications you go through that dont work, the closer you get to figuring out what it is.

I hope you get better soon! (and my dad too..)

This sounds like what I've had though only for a week now. My cough isn't dry, though, but brings up white or cream-colored phlegm. The doctor had me get an x-ray, thinks it's a bronchitis with maybe some pneumonia, has put me on an antibiotic (which isn't working--but this could be viral) and a cough suppressant (which works, but too briefly and can only be used 3x/day), and suggested using either a muscle relaxant (lorzepam) or tylenol with codeine (this last for an alternative cough suppressant).   I have to teach, this coming week---can maybe put off the courses for a week but not longer. The cough paroxyms/choking are still happening and now hiccups sometimes from either the constricted air supply or the cough suppressant.   Not sure what to do.
