2 yr old with sinusitis

by MilitaryMom, Jul 17, 2007 12:00AM
I have a 2 yr old that I believe has sinusitis.  He got what my husband and I thought was a cold several weeks ago, when a couple of days later we started smelling this foul odor coming from him.  After giving him bath after bath, we finally figured out that it was his mucus we were smelling from his running nose.  Being a kid, he had been wiping it off his face with his arms, and sleeves.  After taking him to the emergency room, the doc. diagnosed it as a cold, and gave me sudifed to give him,...claiming it was his breath we were smelling.  We knew better, so we took him back after the weekend had passed.  I did my research over that weekend, and discovered that my son had (has) sinusitis. Unfortunately, when I took him back, we had an appointment with the same doc, who did diagnose it as a sinus problem, but prescribed amoxicilin, which has not helped.
I am taking him back to see a different doctor, but not until a week from now. Is there anything I can do to help this smell, and my son feel better? He is just so miserable. My husband has had to care for him so much more lately, as I am pregnant, and the smell coming from him makes me feel sick. Anything he puts his saliva on,..cups, forks, etc. smells like him, and he smells up entire rooms and vehicles.  I can smell him if he is wihin 5 feet of me, and I know what rooms he has been in because the odor lingers.  Please help me. Any advice you can give, I would be grateful to receive. Thank you.

This could be serious and you should not wait another week for your son to be seen by another doctor.  Your son needs to be seen today.  The children’s hospital in your area would be a good place to locate the most appropriate type of specialist.  More than a few bacteria, especially those identified as anaerobic bacteria can give off a foul odor, for example the odor of rotten eggs due to hydrogen sulfide.  If this is a serious bacterial infection, it could spread beyond the nose and sinuses.  A CT of the sinuses may be useful.

This mucus should be cultured.  Note – anaerobic bacteria require special culture techniques.  If the specialist decides that antibiotic therapy is warranted and anaerobic infection is a consideration, penicillin and metronidazole are generally effective drugs.
