6 month old son

My 6 month old son has been wheezing since he was six weeks old.  He sounds as if he has a stuffy nose, but there is nothing there, and he also has a hacking cough. He is usually very quiet when sleeping, and when he is awake his breathing is very heavy and noisy. When he first got this, the pediatrician admitted him to the hospital and tested him for RSV & FLU, both neg.  She put him in a mist tank, which did not seem to help.  We also got a nebulizer and gave him treatments of albuterool three times daily.  The docor tested him before & after treatments and noted that it did not help, and in fact it may cause him to cough more. We have been to the pediatrician on a weekly basis to try and figure out what this is.  The pediatrician referred us to a pediatric pulminologist, who tested him for whooping cough & cystic fibrosis, both negative. He recently put him on ORAPRED for three days to see if it helped - nothing changed.  We also tried switching him to soy, which didn't help.  He is a VERY happy baby andseems unaffected by whatever he has (except sometimes when he coughs)... We have appt with an ENT and Allergist planned.  At this point I don't know what elese to do?  Any suggestions?

Some babies make noises when they breathe!!  This usually comes from the upper airways and not necessarily from the lungs.  In these babies, they look fine, eat fine, and are happy and active without a problem.  This may be the case with your 6-month-old son.  It is a good sign that the pediatric pulmonologist did not find anything in your son’s lungs.  The ENT may or may not find the source of the noise.  I am not sure I would do anything else unless there is a change in your son's appearance, eating, sleeping, activity etc.

It's great that you're going to have your son seen by a pediatric ENT & allergist!

You can also telephone the LUNG LINE, at 1-800-222-LUNG(5864) and speak with a LUNG LINE nurse, to get more ideas about finding all the actual underlying causes of your son's problems, so that he can be appropriately treated for these.

Also, you might want to speak with your child's doctor about the possibility of pediatric gastric reflux (which can have several possible causes, including various food sensitivities, indoor air pollution, etc.).

When stomach liquid backs up high into the esophagus, this can cause breathing problems.

You can ask your doctor to speak with a pediatric pulmonologist at Nat'l Jewish, to see what the doctors do there, to diagnose and then help children having pediatric gastric reflux, when the reflux causes breathing problems (in case this may be a factor).

There are many things that can be done to help, if his problems are caused by (at least) pediatric reflux. Good luck to you.

an ent md should check him for larygo or tracheal malasia which is just a weakness in the muscle of the larynx or trachea or both....you can look it up on the web and see if his symptoms go along with the definitions......asthma meds dont help this....usually just time as long as your baby doesnt have any respiratory compromise which most babies dont...good luck
