Absolute Mystery - The Doctors Are Stumped!

by Suebac, Mar 19, 2003 12:00AM
My mother has had a reoccurring problem for about 5 months now that has stumped the doctors. It began as what was diagnosed as GERD then progressed to a respiratory infection. There was excessive mucous production to the point where it was actually draining from the mouth like water. Then this mucous accumulated under the hard and soft palate in her mouth and caused this area to swell. She felt like the roof of her mouth was hanging down, filled with this liquid. It also felt as if the membrane in her mouth was stretching, and tissue and muscle were breaking apart, to accomodate this fluid. In addition eating and acidic juices really seemed to accelerate her saliva production.Visually doctors could see absolutely nothing.  Maybe a little inflamation (inflammation). Eventually this swelling caused her to have trouble breathing. She felt as if she had one small hole to breath through. She was given antibiotics and pills to dry the mucous but this didn't help. Eventually she was able to feel a small lump in the roof of her mouth with her tongue.  One day she broke it, and very bitter pus was released. After that it took a long time for the lump to recede but as it did, all the fluid inside the membrane of her mouth seemed to dry up but in a very dramatic way.  It actually felt as if all the tissue and muscle was now moving back into place as well as the roof of her mouth. The membrane seemed to be shrinking back to size. This drying also caused her nostrils to almost close. The ENTS say its a sinus infection (?) but offer no cure. What could this be and where, how and to whom does she go for help? Thx!

From your description, it is very difficult to tell what is going on.  I would suggest that your mother see another ENT for consultation.  She might even consider coming to National Jewish Medical and Research Center for further evaluation of this problem.  Your mother’s problem sounds complex.  It also sounds like it is creating considerable difficulty.
