Active TB diagnosis, now clear x-ray?

by concerned mom too, Apr 26, 2004 12:00AM
My son was diagnosed on Feb 2004 with active TB (see previous post of mine from a week or so ago for x-ray report verbage).  He's now 22 months old and has been on very aggressive treatment for about 10 weeks now.  A set of chest x-rays was done last week, and we've just been told that they are normal.  How can this be?  We've been told many times that his x-rays would not show any signs of improvement for possibly several years.  Is it possible for active TB to clear up this fast.  He was on INH, RIF, PZA, & EMB 5xs/week and amikacin 2xs/week for the first 9 weeks.  For this past week, he has been on just INH and RIF 2xs/week.

Is this a miracle or could it be that he never had TB?  In either case, we are, of course thrilled that he's okay.

In some children with tuberculosis (TB) the chest x-ray remains grossly abnormal for months despite therapy.  Without actually seeing the x-rays, it is hard to say whether he did or did not have TB.  But, given the potentially lethal risks if he had TB and weren't treated, I would complete his treatment even though the chest x-rays look normal.
