Hi, I have just had a nitro washout which showed an RV of 152% and a TLC of 128%, this is in the presence of FEV1 103% FVC 108% FEV1/FVC% 86% VC 113% DCLO 118% MMEF75-25 85%. My CT was clear as was my ECHO, ECG, Stress Test, Histamine challenge and Bronchoscopy, Blood Ox etc. no asthma or bronchitis from biopsy...
I have been assured everything is ok, I have "big lungs" I am sceptical..
This however does not help me sleep as I get SOB lying down, wake up atarving for air, could this be possible with these results... I am not overweight and do not snore.. I do have a cough in morning.. I did have asthma as a child and smoked a pack /pack and a half a week for 17 yrs
Does this RV + TLC suggest emphysema in the presence of other results??
Is this air trapping, the reason I ask this is I feel I am not exhaling fully this leads to a feeling of anxiety + flight or fight??

Your test results suggest that you have large lungs. This is simply biologic variability. Your test results do not suggest any type of lung disease, including emphysema. The increased residual volume (RV) could be an early sign of emphysema. However it would not impact your health, especially since you no longer smoke.
Predicted normal values are averages. The lung function of many people is around the upper part of the bell-shaped curve. You should not have any more lung function tests.
Further evaluation of your nighttime shortness of breath is in order, however. Your symptoms could be caused by something other than a lung problem.

I have also developed a gagging cough in the morning this makes me wretch so bad I nearly vomit, its like there is a body of air between my lungs and my throat causing this. I have not mentioned this to my pulmo as I feel I have so many sympthoms I am confusing him.
Also when I excersize I get SOB for the first few minutes then my breathing settles down into a rythm and I'm ok. This also puzzles me as with Obstructive disease this should get worse?
Not very well with no diagnosis??
