Allergy or GERD

by juliemanker, Aug 06, 2008 09:47AM
I have always had a small battle with allergies and found clearing my throat more often after dairy products.  After seeing an allergist, I found that ragweed was the killer.  However, that's only in the fall.  I caught the horrible flu that was going around.  Fever, sinus drainage...you name it.  It started February 2nd, 2008 and even today (Aug 6th) I am clearing my throat constantly...mostly after I eat.  My allergist said a prolonged drainage of phlegm can cause acid reflux.  She prescribed Prilosec.  I haven't tried it because my only symptom is clearing my throat after I eat and when I cough, I can definitely bring up clear mucous.  However, I don't have heartburn or pain or any of the other symptoms.  I know blowing my nose helps after I eat but doesn't prevent the coughing/clearing my throat.

This discussion is related to Excessive coughing/mucus after eating.

I also started using a sinus irrigation system (salt water).  That has done wonders for me.  I haven't had to spray my nose with Afrin (the only other thing I found to work at night and my dr said no no no).  However, I noticed after I use the irrigation system, my left sinus cavity holds the water.  I can blow my nose after I irrigate but it's not until 5 minutes later that I lay down or bend over that the water will drain.  Again, only on the left side.

OH!  And my friends think I'm crazy when I tell them I get sores in my mouth from eating acidic foods (oranges etc).  I haven't had too much problems until this constant clearing.  Now I can almost guarantee that it's going to happen.
