Altered ability to smell & taste

by web guy, Feb 07, 2007 12:00AM
Several weeks ago I had a sinus infection.  Prior to the infection I had an excellent ability to smell & taste.  After the infection passed, this ability was greatly altered.  Now, EVERYTHING smells and tastes exactly the same... kind of like roasted garlic. I can distinguish things like vinegar and salt however. I thought that perhaps these senses would return to a more normal state given a bit of time, but thus far (6 weeks) no improvement.  Is there anything I can take to restore normal function?

It is possible that you still are having the effects of the sinus infection and swelling on the nerve endings or you still have the infection present.  If you are not having any other symptoms, it is probably simply going to take longer for the swelling to subside and the nerve to function normally again.

Mine is also the similar case. Few weeks ago I was sick for 3 weeks with cold/cough/fever & had a sinus infection as per my physician. It was treated by anti-biotics & all the sickeness was gone. After finishing the course of antibiotics, my nose started loosing the mucos. But I lost of the sense of smell(if I keep my nose very close to cloth/food then I could smell little bit(1%). Prior to the infection I had an excellent ability to smell & taste.

How long this will continue. When do I regain my sense of smell ?. Pls advise me If I need to rush to see my physician or should I wait for a while ! Thanks a lot.
