Copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder)
Smoking and copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) can occur by smoking cigarettes. The first step in diagnosing COPD is a complete medical history including any history of lung disease in your family. The next step is a physical examination. Finally the testing includes a chest x-ray and breathing tests called pulmonary function tests (PFTs).
In a small number of cases of COPD there is a hereditary basis, called alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency. This can occur in people who have never smoked. It is the result of not having enough of a major protein, called alpha1 antitrypsin, in the blood. A blood test that measures the amount of alpha1 antitrypsin is added to the steps used to diagnose COPD.
It is possible for an autoimmune connective tissue disease to affect the lungs. You may need further testing to see if this is affecting you.
