Asbestos exposure

by nguy22, Oct 22, 2002 12:00AM
Recently as a fraternity initiation event, a couple of my buddies and me had to go into an abandoned hospital that was made during the 1950's. Well after that happened we found out it was full of asbestos. Nearly all of the ceiling tiles were on the ground and were damaged and we were walking on them. We did not purposely kick them up to make dust but I imagine some was in the air and got on us and our cloths. My question is what kind of risk am I at for the related conditions such as asbestosis, and cancer. Should I see a doctor? We were in there for about an hour and a half and I am a non-smoker. It was my only known exposure to asbestos.

Thanks

I am interested in this, also. In the early 1970's I had a summer job painting in one of those extremely old brown brick elementary schools. They had pipes everywhere that had been wrapped with stuff and the outside covering was paper-like and covered with thick dust. They had me paint all the pipes, from a ladder, and my face was no more than a foot away at all times. Is thirty years enough of a safety margin to know for sure I'm safe?
