Asthma? or COPD

PFT revealed normal FEV1 over FVC ration of 84% and improvement to 90% after Ventolin challenge.  Also a low FEF 25-75 of 33% that corrected to 56% with Ventolin challenge, consistent with COPD with main involvement of the smaller airways.  Chest x-ray revealed retrosternal air, depressed diaphragms, hyperinflated air fields consistent with COPD.  These tests were done at a university hospital.  My allergist has repeated tests but thinks it is more consistent with Asthma.

Are COPD and Asthma related?  Also, will condition worsen as time goes by?  I am 58 caucasian female, history of hepatitis B which resolved with no treatment (possibly autoimmune???), Graves Disease, Pernicious anemia, Elevated Cholesterol. Although I have inhalers -- Seravent, Aerobid and Proventil -- I don't use as they increase my heart rate, my hand and body shakes and I feel faint.  I do carry the Proventil and have used it on occasion but do not like using.

I know your question is an "old" question, seeing that today is the 23 June 2002. But let me clarify that asthma IS COPD. There are 5 diseases that are known as COPD. They are: Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Bronchectasis, Cystic Fibrosis, and Emphysema. So yes, COPD and asthma are related. It sounds as if your pulmonary function tests aren't too bad but they are better with therapy. Also, your FEF25-75 does show a significant involvement with your small airways and the dramatically improve with bronchodilator therapy. Hope you are doing well now.
