Asthma smoking recovery time?

by Nickoteen, Feb 20, 2007 12:00AM
My situation.I smoked weed on basically a daily basis for 5 years.I have asthma.I am allergic to marijuana. When I would smoke it through the years my chest would get tight and I always had lots of mucus.I quit 3 months ago and have felt a bit better but still getting alot of mucus and having breathing problems. If I cough it makes a harsh rattly sound. How long does it take for the lungs to recover from this? Am I expecting too much too early? Or will it take alot longer for my lungs to feel better?

Also a bit worried that I have the beginnings of chronic bronchitis.I get alot of mucus.Could this just be from my lungs working to recover?

A further note.I had spirometry done over a year ago and everything turned out normal

Thanks

This is of course a very difficult question to give a specific answer.  Many people who smoke marijuana have inflamed their airways and have symptoms for a long time after stopping.  It may mean that you need some medications to control the inflammation and allow your lungs to heal and to see if you will need medications in the future. I would suggest speaking with your physician about the symptoms you are experiencing and discussing the use of inhaled steroids to control these symptoms.

Also another thing. If my small airways are constantly producing mucus and are inflamed will this improved much over time? Or is this something permanent?
