Asthma

Hello,
I have asthma and have been sick and given antibiotics off and on for several months, I have had wheezing chest tightness, pain when breathing, difficulty with exercising coughing up brown colored stuff especially at night. Most of the pain is on the left side, front, and back. While taking the antibiotic I seem to feel better. However when I finish about a week maybe two it seems to start over again. A few days or so ago I felt like I was going to pass out, I was told that I looked very pale, blue lips, my heart felt like it was beating very slowly along with feeling a little sick to my stomach. Could this have been related to my asthma? Also, I take a beta-blocker and several other medications for H/B. I

It is not clear if this is a respiratory problem or a heart problem.  Your doctor must clear this up quickly.  If you have asthma, beta-blockers not only do not allow some of the key medications to work effectively, they also can make the asthma worse.  The symptoms you have described need to be clearly attributed to either your lungs or heart before being able to treat them.

Back in 1982 my husband was on beta blockers for high blood pressure. He ended up with a lung abscess due to bronchoconstriction after a severe cold/bronchitis. It presented as an abnormal spot on his lung. Imaging wasn't as advanced back then as it is now. A needle biopsy through his chest wall confirmed the diagnosis. At that time he had not been diagnosed with asthma, which was determined at a later time.

He has never been on beta blockers for his high BP since that time, although he is still on BP meds (three of them) and inhalers now.

Just thought I'd give you his scenario to help you make up your mind :-).
