Back Pain After Having Pneumonia

by ali2004, Aug 16, 2004 12:00AM
5 Weeks ago I started having bad pains in my back especially at night and at fist thought I just had a bad back. After a 3 nights of pain I had to go to the emergency room where they didi a x-ray and told me I had a chest infection and gave me antibiotics. After 5 days I still did not feel any better and went to see my doctor and he took blood test and told me to take it easy for a few days. The following day I was in very bad pain and admitted to hospital where they diagnosed me with pneumonia. I spent a week in hospital taking antibiotics IV and having numerous x-ray’s and then left with a course of antibiotics to take for a week.
That was 4 weeks ago and I’m still having bad pains in my back, especially when I wake in the morning, lie down or take a deep breath. Is this normal? I’ve at no point had a cold or fever and no pain in my chest just in my back and generally a fit 26yr old male. I do smoke but have been cutting down since I’ve been ill. I play a lot of sports and am worried if I should start playing again as yet as I’m starting to get frustrated butting my life on hold. I do have a appointment for a X-ray in a couple of weeks for a check up but Im not sure if I should see my doctor before?

Tell your doctor that your back pains are continuing 4 weeks after you were treated with IV antibiotics.  The chest x-ray should be done now rather than waiting a couple of weeks.  If your pneumonia is continuing you will need further treatment.  Pneumonia may cause pleurisy, an inflammation or irritation of the pleura, the sac that holds the lungs.  This can cause chest tightness and pain, which is felt more with deep breathing and coughing.  The pleurisy could be due to bacteria or viruses.  Antibiotics will help a bacterial infection, but will not help a viral infection.  Over time your body's natural defenses will clear a viral infection.  A pulmonologist is the type of specialist to help with this type of lung problem.
