Bata blocker

The other day my cardiogist prescribed a bata blocker called Toprol XL. I am afraid to take this drug because I am told that bata blockers inhibits the breathing of someone with COPD. My pulmonary doctor says that it does not affect your breathing unless you have asthma, which I do not have, but I do have a sever case of COPD. Does a bata blocker affect the breathing of someone with COPD. The only reason that I was put on a bata blocker was to regulate my blood pressure and pulse rate, as sometimes when I have an anxiety attack or if I get mixed up with perfumes or tobacco smoke they elevate. Otherwise they stay down to about 116/76 pulse about 89
