Blood in sputum

I am 22 years old, male, and for the past couple of weeks i have been seeing blood in my sputum in the morning. The blood is usually dark red/brown; this only happens after i wake up and the spit clears up the 2-3 time. I smoked for about 5 years, 5-7 cigarettes a day and i quit last month. I work out 2-3 times a week and walk about 4 miles a day. This reoccurring event made me go to the ER, where they took some blood tests and took an X-ray of my chest. Everything came out fine and they suggested it could be post nasal dripping and perhaps dry air, so i got a humidifier and started using nasal saline but nothing changed. My gums have been bleeding more often lately so i have thought of the possibility of me grinding my teeth at night but i do not think this is it, since i have no history of this happening.  What could this be?
