Bloody sputum in morning only

Bloody sputum in morning only

About 10 days ago I developed what I thought to be bronchitis. I went to the doctor and after examining my breathing with the stethoscope he concurred. I was given an rx for tussionex and told to wait it out. I have begun feeling better, but still have a lot of chest congestion (mucousy cough) and blowing of the nose. What's concerning me is the last 4 mornings my first four or five coughs of the day have blood in the sputum. After these first few coughs the blood is gone. Physically, aside from the congestion I feel like I am doing a lot better. Seeing blood in the phlegm is definitely making me concerned, but the fact that its only first thing in the morning is puzzling.

This is a pretty common finding in infections of the upper airways.  There is a small vessel that probably bleeds during the night and drains down the back of your throat when you are sleeping.  You cough in the morning, clear this out and are fine the rest of the day.  Drink lots of fluids and hopefully, if this is a viral infection, it will go away with what you have been given.
