Breathing Aids for Severe Scoliosis?

Hi. I have kyphoscoliosis, which places my rib cage in a very awkward position and therefore limits lung capacity. Thus, I can't breathe very well and when I exercise I get tired extremely fast (exercised induced asthma?). The last doctor I went to (this past June) said that I would probably need an oxygen tank when I get into my retirement years. As of right now, I'm trying to lose weight to help with managing my scoliosis and other health factors, but I can't because I can barely breathe while exercising! Is it possible for me to take a supplement for energy or possibly use an over-the-counter steroid inhaler (if those exist), or anything else to get rid this breathing problem?

Hi, the basic cause needs to be treated for your breathing to improve. The steroid inhalers will help if you have in addition bronchospasm, due to asthma. You can check to rule out asthma as this can aggravate your breathing problem. Also, take precautions against any lung infections and get treated early. Avoid smoking as this can further compromise lung function. Practise breathing exercises to improve the lung function. Take care. Regards.
