Breathing when lying down?

I gasph for breath when in lying down position.  Iam 74 years old.  I sleep mostly in the sitting position.  Been going on since I fell on my shoulder 3 months agao.----------  WHAT SHOULD I DO?  PLEASE HELP;

This sounds like it could be cardiovascular. Do you only have this while lying down? Or just at night? Or are there other times that this has occurred, such as during physical exertion? You really should see your doctor about this, if it has been going on for a few months. It is not normal to have to sleep propped up. I only have to sleep propped up during bad asthma exacerbations. It could be something as benign as sleep apnea, or something more serious involving the lungs or your heart.
