COPD caused by SJS?

by aap03, Dec 01, 2008 09:37AM
A little about me. I'm 25, former smoker(quit a few months ago). Last year I was hospitalized with Stevens Johnsons Syndrome(SJS), which left me with chronic dry eye and chronic bronchitis although I did not experience any obvious respiratory symptoms. Prior to that I was absolutely healthy and played sports and worked out fairly regularly. After a few months recovering from this, when I started strenuous exercises i.e. running, sprinting, I felt my chest tightening up. I went to a doc who said it was probably asthma and prescribed formoterol/budesonide and montelukast sodium. A few months later, my bedroom was treated for termite infestation, the fumes of which I presumed cleared up after about 4 days. After returning to my bedroom for a few nights, I woke up in a panic with severe SOB. This pattern continued for 2 more nights before I went to see a pulmonologist who said it sounded like asthma and prescribed oral prednisone for 5 days following which I did a PFT and was diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis. I did a follow up test 2 months later. The numbers for the tests in % are below.

FVC         84.8                   84.63
FEV1       70.2                    69.1
PEF         88.1                    90.3
RV-He      65.0
TLC-He     80.4
RV% TLC-He  82.7
DLCO SB   54.1
DLCO/VA   81.6

How would you interpret the results? What do you think the cause of my COPD is? Long term prognosis? Cause of low DLCO and drop in it from test 1 to test 1? I am currently on tiotropium bromide and salmeterol/fluticasone propionate. My reason for posting this is one doc is pessimistic and the other highly optimistic.

Thank you.
