Can Mold Cause Chronic Sudden Lung Congestion
Dear Doctor,
I have always exercised daily and do not smoke. The house in which I live has some black mold here and there which I have been keeping under control with bleach and from which I have never had symptoms. I didn't have any symptoms until I went to the basement to sort a lot of memorabilia that had been ruined by mold due to a flood. I spent about an hour and a half down there.Whereas my living quarters has no musty smell, the basement and the things I was sorting do. Since then, about two weeks ago, my breathing has become very laboured, even at rest, with severe lung congestion which I cannot seem to bring up. When I cough, which is often, there is no or very little phlegm but a taste of blood. Each breath I take makes heavy wheezing noises, unless I take very small shallow breaths. I have still been struggling through my work outs trying to hang on to at least some level of fitness. About twenty years ago my nose permanently plugged up due to a basement where I was living, that flooded. My nose never fully recovered despite visits to specialists. My fear is that my lungs won't fully recover and I'll lose the results of three decades of faithful exercise, not to mention the ability to live without the constant distraction of breathing problems.
