I was told by the doctor that I have Tonslitis, he gave me penicillin. My problem is that it is not working yet and I can not sleep. Everytime I try I weak up because my throat hurts so much do to the fact that I can not swallow. I have tried acetaminophen with codeine it has not help. Do you have any suggestion?? Desparately need sleep.

Xylocaine® (lidocaine) is an inhaled anesthetic drug.  Using it by mouth in a gel form called viscous Xylocaine® can help.  If the tonsillitis is due to a streptococcal (strep) infection, your sore throat should be gone within 48 hours of the time that you started taking the penicillin.  If your throat still hurts after that time you should be re-examined by your doctor.  You may have either a bacterial or viral non-strep infection.

Maybe your tonsillitis is caused by a virus, in which case antibiotics don't work.

You could try sucking on an ice cube. Check out:

"Self care
*Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon in a glass of water).
*Avoid acidic drinks or spicy food.
*Paracetamol or paracetamol syrup (e.g. Calpol) can relieve symptoms.
*Soothing lozenges can help by keeping the mouth and throat moist and more comfortable.
*Ice-lollies or ice cream can help.
