Choking and mucus build up in throat

I was diagnosed with lupus in 1997, which has since been in remission. I have always had extreme sensitivity to dust, smoke, smog, strong smells etc., etc, wherein particles seemed to get into my throat and mucus builds up in throat and I cough for I seem to be about to choke. Recently, I ingested a piece of plastic and subsequently, bronchoscopy was done, and findings were normal, the plastic wasn't in my lungs. A week or so after the bronchoscopy during which time I had experienced slight pain/ soreness in throat, I started being unable to eat food, after a few mouthfuls, I am about to choke and am coughing a lot, I choke on drinking water too, and it takes hours for the coughing to subside. I couldn't cough out the water in my throat which seems to be stuck in mucus. A doc suspects myasthenia...God would indeed be cruel to give me both Myasthenia and lupus...problem is, both doesn't explain why I cough and mucus builds up in throat in reaction to strong smells like smell of phenyle at hospital, etc. I couldn't even bear the smell of the hospital, for reaction starts, how am I supposed to get treatment done? What could be causing these multiple problems?

This discussion is related to Excessive coughing/mucus after eating.

Allergy table montair LC a combination of montelukast sodium and levocetrizine helped me..I no longer suffer  dysphagia while eating. Dr Anuj Singhal at max Hospitals told me, the mucus build up is just allergy. At least the tablets have helped me get back to a normal life. Unfortunate, I have just been diagnosed with multinodular goitre with left thyrpid retrosternally extended downwards, displacing trachea to the right...now I need a good thyroid surgeon in Delhi....also the decision has to be made whether total thyroidectomy or hemithyroidectomy is to be done, for the right thyroid lobe is also enlarged with lots of huge nodules. Left thyroid  FNAC suggested colloid goitre

The choking sensation happened about 7 days or so after I had a bronchoscopy done, is the bronchoscopy responsible?
I have seen an ENT specialist at Max Hospitals Delhi, and he has prescribed Montelukast Sodium and Levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets for allergy...could allergy make some people choke on food?

I have been taking the medicines regularly but tonight I choked again...it is really horrible and it lasts and lasts for hours. I know its not exact choking for I can speak..its an about to choke sensation. Its not my larynx. But somewhere food sticks, maybe the pharynx, its somewhere where coughing doesn't quite reach. I can do Ahem Ahem for hours to clear my throat but the stuff remains, affecting my breathing , that is, when I breathe, it touches that spot, and I do not breath very well.

Once it happens, I cannot take anymore food and despite hunger, I cannot eat.
It doesn't happen with particular kinds of food too. One day, I can eat ice-cream, another time I choke on it.

I know that when strong smells/smoke etc enter my nostrils, somewhere, deep where coughing doesn't quite reach, mucus builds up...that has also worsened lately.

Are these two things related?

I feel, the spot where mucus builds up to smell may be at the junction somewhere between nose and throat.

Why should food/curry stick there ?

My doc at home had advised me to take some laryngeal/pharyngeal dis-mobility test, which I haven't done.(Is it the same as the test where I had to swallow some colored liquid and its movement down my throat is examined?)

I am really terrified...

Hello and hope you are doing well.

A dermatologist can help with skin allergies. But the allergic response is triggering episodes of mucus build up. I suggest you consult an ENT or allergy specialist. In the meantime, maintain a diary and note down and monitor your symptoms. This may help to narrow down the search.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Thank you so much Dear Doctor. Your comment has been very helpful. Would a dermatologist know about such allergies doctor? That is what my rheumatologist at Apollo Hospitals referred me to. (I am an SLE patient)

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Your symptoms could be an allergic response to triggers. We can develop allergies to different things throughout our lifetimes as the allergy develops in response to a repeated stimulus.  If you haven't undergone formal allergy testing, that might be beneficial.  I would suggest you obtain a referral to an allergist or an ENT who does allergy testing.  That is the only way to reliably know what is causing your allergic reaction.  Some allergies can be life-threatening as they can precipitate anaphylactic shock in which the swelling can be so severe that it impairs the ability to breathe. Therefore, I would suggest you see someone as soon as possible.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
