Choking sensation in throat

Hi

I suffer from Asthma and recently all-clear for Pulmonary Sarcoidosis - My Asthma seems really under control and I haven't had a full blown attack in years.  However I take medication called Seretide 250mg Inhaler ( Advair) and recently after taking my meds I feel a choking sensation in my throat, like something is stuck there and it can last a long time - it feels like my throat is numb and it almost leads to an Asthma attack only I stop it by calming down and trying to breathe -
I have had it all day today and it is really distressing.  I have heard of a certain muscle spasm that can cause this but I'm wondering if my meds are contributing, eventhough I have been on them for four years and this is only a recent annoyance.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards
J

Hi Candy

I talked to my Doc about this just last week and she found I had a pretty bad case of thrush in my throat from the inhaler - I know I should rinse my mouth after puffing on the inhaler but I'm not always in a place to do that.  Anyway my lungs are seemingly clear and for the first time in years my dose has been reduced I'm now on Advair 125 mgs, so my daily dose has halved, I was given a one dose pill to clear up the thrush and the choking feeling has subsided. So I presume it was the thrush that was giving me the choking feeling.  Now I have a bad cold so it is hard to know if the reduced dose of advair is helping my breathing, but I do feel a bit better, hope you can find some relief to your symptoms because it is an awful feeling.

Thanks for your reply

Thank you for your concern for the rescue workers. I have recently returned from 10 days at Ground Zero in the Hot Zone. I was unable to use a respirator and also do my job as a mental health worker and have been coughing up black gunk for several days. I was down there 14 hours a day for 10 days and, naturally, have concerns. Unless the smell is bad, not very many people wear respirators. Many people had eye problems, but I didn't. Most of those people wore contacts. Every evening I had a terrible sore throat and every morning I was very hoarse for hours, but it would go away as the day progressed. I've never been so filthy in my life. It was an honor to be able to go there and listen and help the best that I could.
