Chronic Croup?

by bbgibbs, Mar 01, 2006 12:00AM
Is there such a thing as chronic croup? I searched the web and was unable to find any information. My 3 yr old son has croup AGAIN, he has had croup at least 10 times now in the past 2 years. Everytime he has to be prescribed steriods because it starts off so bad, espeically the horrible stridor.

The episode before last (he woke up with it again this morning), we had to take him to the er in the middle of the night because he was having problems breathing. (this was the worst yet) He was given decadron and oral epi in the er.

Is there anything we can do to help prevent croup? From what I am told he is supposed to outgrow it by the time he is 5. But then I hear from others who have teens with croup. Are there any preventative measure we can take? Anything homeopathic that will help? Once the croup starts it is usually so severe that we start him on steriods asap because of the stridor. I am waiting for an appt at the peds now for this times script. I am just at my wits end and feel so bad for my little guy.

Could there be an underlying issue since he has had croup this many times? Should we worry?

There are some children who do get repeated episodes of croup.  Sometimes, this is because of a problem with the vocal cords.  I would suggest seeing a pediatric ENT who can help in this evaluation.  The other possibility is that this is asthma.  Your pediatrician can help you with this possibility.

So sorry to hear about your problems.  My daughter had croup one time, last month (she is 2) and it scared the living bejesus out of me.  I've never driven so fast to the ER in all my life.  I would discuss your concerns with your pediatritian, maybe there is some preventative meds they can give.  I know some of the allergy meds keep swelling down and using a humidifier can help against croup starting in the first place.  Good luck, I know just how you feel, but I cannot imagine going through it again and again.

I was diagnosed with chronic croup when I was about 9 years old and I am now 26 years old. I have had croup bouts as an adult (over 18 years old) atleast three or four times. It has often been a result of stress and being overtired. The only medication that has ever helped me is "Promethazine with DM" I encourage you to speak with the doctor regarding this cough suryp. My mother continues to tell the story of the first night she gave it to me and how she was able to sleep like she hadn't in a couple of years.

i have had the whooping cough before and it seemed to go away when i took my meds but this time but the only thing that i can think of is that she is exposed to something that is irritating her alot and she is coughing to keep it out of her lungs so have her checked out as soon as possible but when they say take her tonsils out dont do it .

What is croup?  I've heard of mono, and low B12.  Check out my long post on the main menu page.
