Concerned mother

My baby seven months old was diagnosed with Geographic tounge by two doctors. I am concered because I think it could potentaly be herpes. How can you tell the difference between these two?  The tounge starts to have a white covering and then it looks as if the coating was scrapped off showing the apperance of flat flesh circular area.  The area seems to get larger until the whole tounge is flat.  Sometimes this starts at the tip of tounge and sometimes near the back of the mouth.  At times the gums as well as lips are extreemly red possiably from the impaulse of sucking Im not sure.

Herpes is due to a viral infection.  Geographic tongue is not due to an infection.  A viral culture can tell the difference between them.

Hey Imperal--

My friend had a similar problem and he thought it was coxsackie.  He started panicking cause he didn't know what was going on, but he found this really good medical site and he found out it was just strep throat.  He was better in about a week.  The site's really good though, cause it organizes a bunch of other medical sites, and all the work is done for you.

Here's the address:

Good luck!  ;-)
