Codeine is an effective cough suppressant in many cases, but before committing yourself to a lifetime of taking a narcotic medicine, you should work with your doctor to find out the cause of your cough and treat that cause.  Using codeine in the meantime, to suppress what sounds like a really irritating cough, would be fine, until the cause is found.  The most common causes are asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) commonly referred to as acid reflux, and postnasal drip.

By the way, there are other non-narcotic medicines that can also suppress cough such as amitriptyline.

But, do check with your doctor to find the cause.

I have had a thick sticky clear gel like substance in my throat and mouth now for nearly two years. I have seen doctor after doctor over it as well. I started off going to an ENT and she did a larynscopoy and said i had GERD. I took the meds for nearly 6 months as they kept telling me it took awhile to work, well it never did. I continued going to doctors and had a barrium swallow, ct scan of neck, throat and chest that I guess were ok as I'm still alive but showed no reason for this. I have taken mucinex and drank tons of water and it's still there, I also did a saline rinse and it hasn't worked along with steam. Nothing is working and this stuff is driving me crazy. I have no clue nearly two years after the fact. I went to bed "normal" one night and woke up with this and it has never given me a moment's peace since. I have also tried steroids and they didn't work as well. If you could shed some light I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Sandy
