Cough and bronchitus(bronchitis)

by Bunica, Jul 19, 2007 12:00AM
My daughter is living overseas and currently experiencing a persistant cough that feels like it is moving into her chest.  She can get perscription type drugs over the counter there but we need to know what to start with since she is allergic to penicillen and the only other medicine she is on is synthoid.

She said she has seen the Z-pac over the counter...should she start with that?

Thanks

If there are no medical facilities accessible to your daughter, the use of over the counter medication could be her best option.  But that is rarely the case.  Treating in a 'shotgun' fashion is hazardous, especially the treatment of a respiratory infection that seems to be moving to her chest.  The chief hazard is the delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment, while waiting for, what may be inappropriate therapy, to take effect, while the infection progresses.  In addition, depending on where she currently resides, there may be infections peculiar to that area, not seen in the U.S., but common there and readily diagnosable with reasonable certainty by medical caregivers in the region.

The best advice we can give is for your daughter to take whatever measures are necessary for her to be seen by competent medical practitioners and have a chest x-ray.

I don't believe the Dr.s will be able to offer anything close to prescribing on this forum but I will tell you that my Physician has prescribed the Z-Pack numerous times for my bronchitis. It would be musch wiser if your daughter would consult a physician rather than self medicating even if these drugs are available over the counter.

In my experience with looking for over the counter drugs, vitamins, etc. I find it really helpful to just ask the pharmacists. They are really knowledgeable and helpful.
