Cough and crackling in chest

My husband has had a terrible cough for about 3 weeks, and intermittently has a "crackling sound" in his chest.  This usually is more apparent when he is lying down on his right side specifically.  He has had a chest x-ray, and was told there is no pneumonia.  He has been on advair for about 3 weeks now (twice daily), and started on prednisone five days ago (60mg day 1, 55mg day 2, 50mg day 3, etc..), and has not has had any improvement.  When he coughs, it sounds like he is going to cough up a lung.  He is not and has never been a smoker.  He has been a manager of a grain elevator for 16 years, so there is some exposure to grain dust.  But this really has just started happening.  I am worried that there is something seriously wrong, but don't know what action to take from here.  Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not a doctor but he should wear a mask at job .  I've had it a few times its either been asthma and bronchitis and/or pneumonia.
