well mine is due to environmental allergens caused by the aerial spraying of toxins ..my cough has been going on for 6 months now a dry cough that starts mostly at night, sore itchy eyes .headaches sometimes , scratchy thoat , fatigue You can ask for a heavy metals toxicity test ...
The other causes for long term cough besides asthma are GERD and post nasal drip from allergies. GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease where the stomach acids come back into the esophagus and spill into the wind pipe causing cough. Treatment with antacids will help neutralize the acids. Post nasal drips can occur with sinusitis and throat infections. Giving up cigarettes will abolish smoker's cough in 90% of people. Talk to your GP about the other causes for cough in the meantime you could try warm salt water gargles and breathing exercises.
I've had GERD, post nasal drip, asthma and allergies all ELIMINATED as causes of my chronic cough. Codein is the only drug that helps - but codein is not a drug that one wants to use indefinitely. I've been coughing (dry tickle cough) for 12 years. They can put a man on the moon but they can't find a cure for this incredibly annoying and embarrassing condition. I used to be a singer and actress and now I can only perform if I'm using codein - which has some awful side effects eg dry mouth, stomach cramps. This cough may be just a silly little tickle cough - but it has ruined my life.
I am an older woman and have asthma. I was recently put on lisinopril for blood pressure and within a couple weeks I started coughing and coughing, which triggers asthma attacks. I went on like this for a couple more weeks trying to figure out what changed. I had a Dr. appt. and when I told him, he knew right away it was lisinopril and changed the BP medicine to cozaar. The coughing is terrifying. My lung walls hurt. The mucus/phlegm is so thick (and has a metallic taste) it about chokes me. I cannot sleep at night. I am so tired. None of my asthma medicines help. No prescription or OTC nasal sprays help. No anti-acids help. I have drank a ton of water daily. Mucinex and Sudafed don't help. I am about at my wits end. Is there nothing that helps this cough, esp. at night? Daytime is not so good either. I almost hate to be in public because the episodes are spontaneous and not very sightly, so that coupled with my asthma and a weak bladder I am shying away from people and places. I never never experienced anything like this in my life. Has anybody tried anything that helped? I have read it could take 2 wks to 3 mo. for this to go away.
