Cough with Back Pain

I have had a horrible cough for about 2 weeks now. At first I thought it was just a cold because I had all the symptoms; a runny nose, fever, bathroom problems, and a cough. So now everything has just about gone away but my cough has gotten worse. So I've been taking over the counter mucus relieve medicines with delsym every 12 hours to try to get some sleep and its probably helped 3 out of the 14 nights. Now this past night which I've gone without sleep I have developed horrible stabbing pains in my back. It started just in the left upper side but it has moved to the right side also. I am without health insurance because I was laid off from my job last fall. Is there anything that I could be doing differently to treat this to help it go away?
