Cough with excess of Phlegm

For the past 8 months, I have had a cough that started out as a mild cold. But it hasn't gotten any better. Every single day, from when I wake up to the time I go to bed (if I can get sleep), I am constantly coughing or clearing my throat. The phlegm is usually white, sometimes with a bit of yellow. It is almost always extremely thick and a large amount. Sometimes in the afternoon or night, the phlegm is stringy and chokes me. There are some days that I cough up phlegm about every 5 minutes. The coughing can last from seconds to the point where I get tears in my eyes, gag, choke, and eventually throw up. My chest hurts from this, as well as my throat and I have a headache. Sometimes when I eat or drink, I start to gag and choke. I can not do anything but cough and clear my throat (sometimes I clear it every 2 or 3 minutes). If the phlegm is too thick to cough up or just gags me, I have to swallow it again, which can cause even more gaging. I have been to my GP, and ENT doctor, with no results. I have tried just about everything I can think of. I am miserable! Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would try, immediately, ClearLungs (you can get it online at iherb or any other health supplement store probably). Also, if you are suffering from scar tissue in the lungs (or anywhere else for that matter) Serrapeptase is an enzyme that rids our body of scar tissue and thick mucous/phlegm. It is an amazing product and you can get that too at iherb or any other supplement store online. Best of luck to any folks out there suffering from shortness of breathe caused by scar tissue and/or mucous.

I have experienced something similar and have tried steriods, nosesprays, decongestents, inhalants, nebulizer with lidocaine, and most recently, after a barium swallow, have been put on axiphex, a prescription medication for reflux.  I personally think I'm suffering from a cough that is partly due to gerd (reflux) and partly due to increased histamines.  I suffer at night, and, ironically, in certain offices where I work...but not as bad as in other places.  I'm at my wit's end and my boss is having fits too.  I work in a hospital so it's a bit unseemly when I start the coughing/gagging/retching thing.  I wish I knew the solution.  At times I feel so crappy, I end up depressed...like I'm stuck with this for the remainder of my life.

Let's try to keep in touch on this. I have had the exact same problem and symptoms, desperatehousewife. I am sick of it. I hate being in a crowd too that's when I really crank up the coughing. It's worse if I start to smell someone's cologne or get hot. It takes me a while to "adjust" to the room or something. My tongue tastes sour and breath smells at times, along with an irritable feeling. I did try something three times, I got completely off of sugar and noticed the cough went away. But I'm not sure that this is fool-proof, the doctor also gave me some Amoxi-Clavilin. I read online that's for stubborn respiratory problems. Jeeez keep me posted on what you learn. I am so SICK of this darn cough! Where is help?!

Hello,
I had a cough that lasted what seemed to me to be half a year. My solution was to eat garlic cloves (one three times a day) raw. And I began using Cod liver oil once a week (My GreatGrandmother's cure as raw onion and garlic contain natural antibiotics). The suggestion that you drink plenty of fluids is also a good one.

I was choking out of my sleep and so I understand your concerns. Mine started with the flu and lasted well beyond that. If you smoke...STOP. and try eating raw vegetables and fruits (carrots and blueberries) and limiting your sugar and dairy intake. They produce mucus and you really don't need to enhance the problem.

Anyway, I hope this helped. This is a silly question, but...What does your physician say?

Here's to a healthy recovery!

Try drinking lots of water and staying away from caffeine for a while.
