Crackles in lungs while lying down only

I am 43yrs and have had no prior chronic respiratory issues (asthma, bronchitis).  My problem is that when I lay down, after a while, I will start hearing crackles (popping noises) when inhaling and exhaling.  Sounds like when I had pneumonia a long time ago.  It doesn't happen every time I lay down, but is getting more frequent.  What is strange is that it happens if I am lying on my back or left side only.  If I turn over to my right side it's gone, but if I go back to my left side or back, it's there again.  The crackles aren't there upon waking in the a.m.  My doctor isn't sure what it could be.  Maybe GERD, maybe bronchi issues.  If so, wouldn't this still be apparent when I lay on my right side?  Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has had this also so that I can narrow this down before I jump into getting too many tests done that I cannot afford.  Thanks for any suggestions.

I developed these symptoms about 5 years ago. I was a 30 pack year smoker and gave them away in my 40th year. I am turning 50 this year and considered obese ( 105kg and 178cm tall).
I had the rales whenever I lay down, it usually took about 20 minutes for them to start, the doctor could never hear them, he suspected mild COPD, he prescribed ventolin and symbicort and a bunch of other inhalers that cost well over $100.00 but did nothing, in fact I felt they were making the problem worse.  The crackles used to get to a point they would keep me awake at night. They were at their worst laying on my left side and back to begin with, I got some relief laying on my front but eventually they started there as well. Inescapable at here worst.
I also started getting mild shortness of breath while I was sitting at rest as a couch potato. It worried me that it was probably some form of lung disease.
The doctor did a ct scan and found some lung scaring (pulmonary fibrosis)
I stared some alternative treatments, the Budwig protocol, H2O2 ingestion, then I found Bill Munros H2O2 inhalation therapy(only I used a 2% then later 1% solution), Then lastly I found Jim Humbles MMS.
Budweg helped but the H2O2 inhalation was the most effective treatment and cleaned out all the infection in my lungs.I also used support of MSM, vitamin C, and NAC to keep the elasticity in my lungs.
Finally, a mate at a worksite put me onto MMS and that was what I believed fixed the root cause, bad gut flora from years of smoking. the crackles just healed over time.
My latest spirometry estimated my lung function that of a 46 year old, no more shortness of breath and I haven't had the rales come back at all.
I did extensive research on every aternative treatment I took on. I also took on a low impact exercise program- once a week I would go to the gym and get the heart rate up for about 1/2 and hour, do some strength training for 1/2 hour.
It has taken me 4 years to heal properly.
What worked for me may or may not work for you, I just felt there was no other way so I took my health into my own hands. Whats the alternative? end up in a wheelchair with and oxygen bottle and become a burden for someone else? get on a waiting list for new lungs? No thanks.
It's never to late to have a go.
I wish you all the best in health and happiness.

I have the same symptoms as you describe. It gets so bad at times it wakes me up from a sound sleep. It is so maddening but mostly worrisome. I have had pneumonia in the left lung twice and I thought that was why I heard the crackles on that side. I have talked with my Dr about it but he can't hear the noise with the stethoscope. I even tried laying down on my left side before he came in the exam room. I don't know what to do about this problem
