Diaphragm plication

by craneman65, Jan 18, 2009 02:02PM
I have had a paralyzed diaphragm for 7 years, maybe more. I have started wondering about plication and if it would help me. although i do have some shortness of breath and can not sleep on my right side, i am by no means suffering as bad as some people with the same condition. Just wondering if i should have the surgery to get the most out of my breathing as possible. Anyone have first hand experiance that can help me make an educated decision? Will the lung even expand after so long a time?

As is the case with any corrective surgical procedure such as placation of the diaphragm, the improvement in breathing can vary considerably.  However, the majority of people who have this procedure do experience an improvement in their breathing.  And yes, the lung is a remarkable organ and capable of re-expanding after decades of compression.

The best way to make an educated decision is to seek-out a medical center where surgeons have had much experience with the procedure.
