Dry Cough

by pdodgen, Apr 18, 2003 12:00AM
I have been experiencing a severe dry cough now for about 3 weeks.  It is worse at night, usually involving one major spell that wakes me up.  It was accompanied by a severe headache for the first 2 weeks, but the headache has now subsided.  I also was experiencing low blood pressure as well.  When my lungs are listened to I am told that it is in my bronchial tree.  Any ideas what this could be?

An ongoing cough can be a side effect of a group of medicines used to treat high blood pressure called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.  In a person who has a normal chest x-ray and who doesn’t smoke the most common causes of cough are postnasal drip, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and asthma.  Less common causes of cough include heart failure and chronic aspiration, with or without reflux.

You need to be seen by your doctor and have testing done to figure out what this could be and the best treatment.
