Dry nose that is ONGOING! :( HELP!

by carrie640, May 02, 2004 12:00AM
For the past three years, I have been battling a dry nose problem.  It seemed to have start after having a series of colds in the winter of 2001 where I experienced a LOT of congestion.

My doc. sent me for allergy testing...they found nothing.  He gave me Allegra and everything else and while that helped the congestion portion of it, to this DAY, I am having a terrible time with this.  I mean...I have NO mucous AT ALL EVER.  NONE..unless I end up with a cold that results in a runny nose or something like that, but otherwise....I am dry as a bone.  It does get crusty and VERY congested at night.  I have been using saline gel like mad, but it really doesn't seem to resolve it for the long haul...maybe temporarily to relieve it.

I am stumped.  My nose HURTS...it is very very red..and I am miserable because of this. NOBODY can tell me what is going on!

Insight?

Drinking plenty of water will help to keep you well hydrated so that your nose is moist.  As long as you are not on a fluid restriction you should be drinking 6 to 8 8-ounce glasses of non-caffeine non-alcoholic fluid daily.  This should provide more lasting relief.

You mention that your doctor gave you AllegraŽ (fexofenadine), but it is unclear if you take this routinely or just when you have a runny nose.  Antihistamines can be very drying.  A decongestant may help with your nighttime congestion without being as drying.  Also a nasal wash may be more helpful than the saline gel.  Please read our Nasal Wash MedFact at http://www.nationaljewish.org/medfacts/nasal.html for more information about this technique.  Share this information with your doctor to see if you would benefit from this daily treatment.
