Elimination of Allergens -- increased symptoms?

by wannasing, Sep 17, 2009 04:12PM
It is well documented that after you quit smoking you can cough and have phlegm in your airways as your lungs recover, frequently for up to a year.  Can one experience similar symptoms after eliminating a long-standing allergen?

I am allergic to cat dander and was living with two mostly-outdoor cats for 17 years.  My asthma symptoms were generally mild (I used albuterol if I felt choky), but increased over the last two years. Eight monts ago I moved to a new home with no cats, new carpeting, fresh paint, etc.  No pets whatsoever.  I've had an IgE test recently, so I know there are no new allergens in my environment.  I had a terrible acute bronchitis that provoked an acute asthma episode shortly before my move.  I am not short of breath, but now cough up tiny blobs of phlegm nearly every day, and generally feel my bronchi are inflamed.  I'm on Symbicort and Singulair.  My PFTs are good and my doctors do not think I have COPD.  Anyone with similar experiences?
